We live in an age of unparalleled innovation in the field of healthcare. We have all the tools we need at our disposal to vastly improve our health and live long, healthy, and happy lives. On paper, we should all be lean, slender and toned with healthy resting heart rates. We have access to medicine and good food that our ancestors could hardly dream of. And yet, we (especially in the US) are plagued by heart disease, diabetes, and cancers which are utterly preventable.
Why? Because of the western diet and our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Because we stopped caring about what we put in our bodies and opted convenience over quality time after time after time. It’s not all our fault. The society we inhabit doesn’t help. We’re programmed from a young age to crave sugary, fatty and salty foods and we can find them in abundance wherever we look. We’re given inadequate education in school when it comes to nutrition and in many cases, even our doctors aren’t all that learned when it comes to nutrition. Many of us likely grew up with burgers, pizza, and french fries as common staples in the school cafeteria. Worse still, we spend an increasingly massive proportion of our day sitting (which has its own health dangers that we’ll get into later).
So we spend our working days sitting, chugging coffee, or energy drinks to keep us motivated and every few hours we’ll make our way to the vending machine for a heavily processed snack because that’s the convenient and affordable thing to do. Then by the time we get home we’re too tired to cook so, we’ll throw a ready meal in the microwave or treat ourselves to takeout. We’ve convinced ourselves that to live any other way is far too expensive. And heaven knows that money matters at a time like this…

Many of us are still reeling from the effects of the 2007-2008 financial crisis whether we’re aware of it or not. This is the era of corporate wage repression where the companies that we work for deliberately cap our pay in order to insulate their bottom line. It’s an era in which banks have realized the errors of their ways and made mortgages prohibitively hard to acquire for those on a modest income, pushing them into an expensive and often exploitative private rental sector.
Plainly speaking, many of us have far less disposable income than we used to, and poor credit scores to boot. Stop wasting money on the things that are damaging you
Let’s get obvious out of the way. If you smoke a pack of cigarettes every day, get through a bottle of spirits in a week and treat yourself to a Domino’s Pizza every Friday night, yet won’t commit to a gym membership or buy organic veggies because they’re “too expensive”, something needs to change. Your first port of call should be to cut back on the expensive vices which are both compromising your health and taking a big chunk out of your disposable income. Get up and get moving every hour
If your job and your career leave you desk bound this can actually have a profoundly negative effect on your health, especially if you’re the kind of workaholic who spends 10-12 hours at their desk every day, only getting up to tinkle or grab a sandwich to eat at your desk. Sitting at a desk all day, sitting in the car to and from work and sitting in front of the TV for several hours at home puts a lot of pressure on your internal organs which can damage your health in a number of ways. It can impede digestion, decrease heart health and even increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.
One of the easiest (and completely free of cost) ways to improve your health is to get up and moving every hour to mitigate the effects of all that sitting on your body.
Cutting the cost of eating organic
When it comes to nutrition, there’s really no substitute for a diet that’s filled with delicious organic fruits, veggies, grains, and pulses. Most of us in the west, however, have a curious obsession with protein. We’ve been conditioned by the likes of Dr. Atkins and Dr. Dukan to consume as much meat, eggs and cheese as we can to ensure that we get plenty of protein. The trouble is that while protein is certainly a vital macronutrient, we should not pursue it at the expense of healthy fats and carbohydrates. Moreover, a diet that’s rich in meats and dairy products can lead to a range of health problems such as kidney damage, dehydration, constipation and increased risk of cancer (especially if your diet contains a lot of processed meats which, like cigarettes are type 1 carcinogens).
Organic fruits and veggies, on the other hand, contain all the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients you need for good health and a robust immune system. Finally, you don’t need to spend a fortune on new gym gear, running shoes and expensive gym membership to get in shape in the digital age.
