There could be a number of reasons that you are thinking about working from home. Whatever the reason, there are some issues that you might have taken into consideration. In this article, we are going to look at four of the issues that you will be able to avoid if you work from home, and we are also going to look at three that you can’t. When you are finished, you should be able to make an informed judgment about whether or not working from home would be better for you, in terms of typical work issues. Working from home has been a bessing for my family, however for a close friend of mine working from home didn’t work out.

Can: Cost Of An Office

office space

The first thing that you will be able to avoid is the cost of an office. When clients ask me if they should have a separate office location, my first question is, is it necessary? Do you need a physical office space? If you do not need a physical location then working from home is the most money savy idea. It can be expensive to have to pay for somewhere to work for you and potentially your employees, so why not cut out this cost completely? Working from home allows you to work in an environment where you feel comfortable that you have already paid for. Straight away this helps the finances of your business as it will give you some more money to play around with. Many people don’t need an office to work effectively, and if this is true for you, then working at home might be a good choice. Plus, look into any tax deductions based on your home office.

Can’t: Security Issues

No matter where you decide to work, there are always going to be risks with security. It doesn’t matter whether this is your home or an office, there is always a chance that someone can break in and steal your data. This could be a physical attack, or it could happen over the internet. Either way, you are never going to be able to completely avoid security issues. As this is the case, you should always have a copy of your files backed up in a different location so that you don’t lose anything if the worst happens. Plus, make sure to look into cybersecurity as well as a security system for your home.

Can: Injuries On Business Property

There are a number of injuries that happen while people are at work every year. It can be something small or something life-altering, and either way you would need legal help with a personal injury claim. However, if you don’t work in an office then this isn’t going to be an issue for you. You are not going to have to worry about someone else being in charge of the standard of health and safety, so you are going to know that you are as safe as you can be at home.

One of the biggest benefits of working from home is that you know that it is safe for you in terms of not falling over or injuring yourself because of someone else’s mistake. This is why many people opt to work at home, to avoid injuries on business property.

Can’t: Issues With Bullying And Harassment

It can be argued that whether you are working from an office or from home, you are never going to be able to completely avoid bullying or harassment. Thanks to the internet, it is easier than every to bully someone or send them something nasty without having to be in the same room as them. Even worse, it is possible for these things to be sent anonymously, meaning that it can be difficult to find out where it has come from.

Working from home is not going to help you avoid this. It might help you stop people coming up to you and saying things to your face, but it is argued that people will always find a way if they want to. As such, if the only reason that you are considering working from home is to stay away from bullying, it is not going to help. Instead, you should talk to your boss about getting this issue sorted before it goes any further.

Can: Discrimination

While it might not be possible to avoid bullying, it is going to be possible to avoid discrimination. If you work from home, nobody is going to know what you look like, what your sexual orientation is, and sometimes even if you are a man or a woman. As such, nobody is going to be able to discriminate against you for these things. Working at home provides you with this safety net that people do not know who you are, so if this is something that you are worried about, working from home may be a solid solution to your issue.

Can’t: Connectivity Issues

internet issues

The internet is unpredictable, and this is the case whether you are working in an office that has huge server rooms, or whether you are working from home with your standard router. There is no way to get around connectivity issues and this can be an issue for all businesses. Once your connection stops working properly, you can troubleshoot it and try to find the issue, or you can call someone to help you. Preventing this from happening though is not going to be possible. Like we said though, it doesn’t matter whether you are working in an office or from home, because you can access the same IT support depending on what measures you have put in place in case something like this happens.

Can: Fixed Work Schedules

Finally, the last thing that you can avoid is fixed work schedules. Oh, the amazing aspect of being in control of my time. If you work from home, there is likely no time where you have to be sitting at your desk and no set time where you can leave. You can work when you are ready and get the amount of work done that needs completing that day. This can take a lot of pressure off of people as a planned workday is one of the leading causes of anxiety in the business world. Sometimes it can be hard to stick to a fully planned out schedule, but when you are working at home, you don’t have to have one at all. However, remember that to be successful working at home you need a concrete working outline and great self-discipline.
