Pumping Tips for Working Moms.

When I became a mother I knew I wanted to breastfeed. It was healthier, cheaper, and it aids in post-birth weight loss. I also knew that I would eventually have to return to work and pump at my job. having three children (each with their own breastfeeding challenges) has made me appreciate our pumping mothers that much more. Here are some tips I’ve gathered throughout my pumping journey (three kids later).

 

Relax. 

Pumping works the best if you feel like you are in a relaxed and carefree environment. I used to pump in a private room that had a lock. It enabled me to take my time and pump efficiently.

Understand laws. 

Understand breastfeeding laws and know your rights as a pumping mother. You can find info on breastfeeding laws here.

Hydrate. 

 I could always tell if I needed to drink more water. your body knows what you need, so listen to it. Drinking adequate amounts of water helps ensure that you will be producing enough for your little one.Motherhood Is One Wild Ride - Earth Mama®

Pictures. 

Take a photo of your little babe with you while you are pumping. It can release hormones in your brain that will aid with pumping. You can even call the daycare or the sitter to ask about how your baby is doing before you pump.

Pump often. 

As often as your baby nurses or drinks a bottle throughout the day you should pump. Some jobs make that a lot more difficult, but this will ensure that your body is keeping up with baby’s needs. Breast milk is supply and demand. The more you pump the more you will have and vice versa.

Double pump. 

Double pumping allowed me to pump in shorter durations but also produce enough milk to feed my baby. Be cautious using this method because if you nurse in the evenings or on your days off you could have a surplus of milk, but don’t be alarmed your body is really good at leveling itself out based on need. Try to always breastfeed at least 10 minutes per session.

Warm compress. 

If I noticed my milk production was slower than normal (and my water intake was adequate), I would place a warm compress over my breasts before pumping. It allows your body to relax and warm water helps stimulate milk production.

Cooler.

If you do not have access to a refrigerator or freezer make sure you bring a cooler. I recommend this one because it kept breast milk cool all day until I was able to transport it to my freezer.

Nipple butter. 

Nipple butter is a recourse most mothers are unaware of. If you put some on your nipples before you begin to pump it prevents friction issues. This brand is amazing here.

 

Pumping is difficult. Keep loose goals because you never know what may happen. My preemie daughter couldn’t even have breast milk and I ended up having to donate over 100 ounces. (Read her birth story here). Don’t beat yourself up and stay motivated. You got this momma!!
