One day our family woke up and realized things weren’t how we wanted them to be. We weren’t happy and we were determined to find out why. We thought long and hard and realized it was because the world is so vast and we were stuck in one part of it. So many think that if they want to travel and see a new part of the world, they have to spend a lot of money. But that’s not true at all. Even if you don’t realize it yet, there are plenty of ways for you to travel affordably; you just need to consider all the options and occasionally break conventions. There are some tips in particular that you should most definitely be aware of, and we’re going to discuss them now so read on.

Be Open to Flying From a Different Airport

You’re probably used to flying from the airport that’s closest to your home. Makes sense right? Well, not necessarily. If you want to save money and get to your destination in the cheapest possible way, you should compare prices from other nearby airports. By traveling farther to a different airport, you might be able to find a far cheaper flight.

Travel at the Cheapest Times

Different times will result in your paying different prices for travel. This applies both to your plane tickets and to your accommodation. Different days of the week are cheaper than others, and times of the year differ in terms of price too. You should try to travel out of season, and be willing to travel on days that are less appealing to other people. We have noticed Tuesdays give us the best flight deals.

Try Home Sitting

Home sitting is a way of traveling that more and more people are now turning to. They’re doing this because it allows you to stay in a home that’s free for you because you’re helping the owner by looking after it while they’re away. There are plenty of home sitting websites out there that can facilitate this kind of thing, so explore the options and give it a try. You can check out some options here

Take a Road Trip

Road trips are the way to go (at least for our family). They are way more fun and definitely cheaper. Taking a road trip can bring so much excitement because it gives you the chance to explore without constraints, allowing you to move around from place to place as you want to. Many people do this and sleep in their car, others pitch up a tent to save money along the way, or you could travel in an RV. Use a brake fluid tester and ensure your car is ready for the trip. You don’t want to break down halfway through. Check out what is in our Car Emergency Kit.

Choose Open Jaw Flights

Finally, you should consider what’s known as open jaw flights. This is when you fly from one airport but return to a different one. This is often the cheapest way of doing it because you’re not constrained when choosing your return light. Sites like Kayak can help you find open jaw flights like this, so do look into how much money this can save you.

As you now know, there are plenty of fantastic ways to travel on the cheap, so don’t feel like you have to spend a ton of money when you want to see a new part of the world. If you plan it out properly and remain open to these money-saving ideas, you will save yourself a lot of money.
